Karla Krupala, a New York-based painter who identifies as queer, delves into themes of righteousness and isolation in her work. Her focus involves exploring female childhood villains such as Nellie Olson from the 1980s TV show 'Little House on the Prairie.'" Karla examines how in the enjoyment of hating a villain, we become the villain. This becoming righteous leads to isolation and otherness. In isolation, everyday objects can become haunted, such as our furniture and interior settings. She’s drawn to exploring seemingly innocuous artifacts of childhood such as abandoned playground equipment remembered from her childhood growing up in suburban Texas. She uses vivid color and a vibrant palette to evoke a sense of memory, and to reclaim dark childhood shadows in memory and pigment.
